The addition of this route further reinforces Bali’s position as a top destination for Australian travelers.
Acting General Manager of I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, Wahyudi, expressed his appreciation for the inaugural flight.
“Currently, I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport serves nine direct routes to and from Australia: Adelaide, Brisbane, Cairns, Canberra, Darwin, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney. We believe this added frequency will positively contribute to passenger movement between Australia and Bali,” he said.
On its maiden flight, Indonesia AirAsia operated an Airbus A320 under flight number QZ 420, departing Denpasar for Adelaide on Wednesday (June 25) at 23:45 WITA with 77 passengers on board. The return flight, QZ 421, landed in Denpasar on Thursday (June 26) at 11:00 WITA, carrying 154 passengers. The route is scheduled to operate four times per week.
“The inaugural Adelaide service coincides with Indonesia’s school holiday period from June 23 to July 14, 2025. We hope this additional frequency will also attract Indonesian travelers, particularly from Bali, to visit Adelaide,” Wahyudi added.
Meanwhile, Acting CEO of Indonesia AirAsia, Captain Achmad Sadikin Abdurachman, expressed pride in the airline’s latest expansion.
“We are proud to launch Indonesia AirAsia’s first direct flight from Bali to Adelaide. Beyond offering direct access to Bali, which continues to be a favorite destination, this new service also expands travel options to more than 130 destinations within the AirAsia network across Asia and beyond,” he said.
As of May 2025, Australia remains the top contributor of international arrivals at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, with 629,359 passengers recorded. Among the busiest routes, Melbourne led with 449,952 passengers served. With nine direct routes, Australia is the country with the strongest air connectivity to Bali.
“Routes to and from Australia continue to show sustainable and positive performance. This additional frequency not only provides more options for passengers but also creates opportunities for deeper economic and tourism collaboration between the two regions,” Wahyudi noted.
For reference, by May 2025, I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport had served 9.27 million passengers (domestic and international combined). Currently, Bali is connected to 39 international routes served by 46 airlines.
“We are committed to positioning I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport as Bali’s global gateway. Together with all stakeholders, we will continue to explore potential routes to further strengthen Bali’s international connectivity,” Wahyudi concluded.
